Setting: – time, place, social setting, atmosphere

Set during the time of World War 2 on a Pacific Island. The social hierarchy is loosely structured in relation to the boys’ ages which is approximately a group of 6-12 year olds (littluns and biguns). During the beginning, the social setting is decided as a democracy where Ralph is chosen as leader. This causes tension between Ralph and Jack as they are both eligible competitors for power. However, Jack has always believed he is deserving of being the leader so when he isn’t elected take it well when Ralph is elected in charge at the beginning of the book. The atmosphere changes from a variety of moods such as fear, hope, savagery and is also shown by the weather (find quote from storm)
