“Your hand, your tongue: look like the innocent flower But be the serpent under’t” – Lady Macbeth

Lady Macbeth is telling Macbeth to have the guise of the innocent while his true nature should be of a serpent. He should have the temptation to do evil with in him and not have any remorse when going through with what is believed to be the necessary actions. During the time “Macbeth” was written it was believed that the serpent was an instrument of Satan’s used to tempt evil. Lady Macbeth is using this metaphor to show her true feeling’s and influence for Macbeth into looking innocent like a flower but without hiding from the devious nature that she believes he should have as a man.

Shakespeare uses Lady Macbeth and this metaphor to show the power Lady Macbeth has a over a man which during the time was unheard of as it was believed only men had the qualities to show power. Lady Macbeth being a main character and portrayed as an influential person on other characters shows Shakespeare’s respect for women as he presents ideas the majority of people wouldn’t have considered at the time.
