Scene 1

Characters: Banquo, Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, Lenox, Rosse, Attendant, Murderers

Location: Forres. A room in the palace.

Time: Unknown

Events: Macbeth believes that it is necessary to kill Banquo and his son because he is benefitting from Macbeth killing Duncan as much as Macbeth himself is despite him not having to go through with any evil acts. Macbeth meets with two murderers and tells them that if they have no morals and if they want to improve their lives then they will kill Banquo and his son, Fleance.

Quotes: “So weary with disasters, tugged with fortune, That I would set my life on any chance To mend it or be rid on’t.” – 1 murderer. The murderer is confirming he would do anything to make his life better including killing someone. However, Macbeth has also gone to extreme lengths to kill someone but his life was already good and his actions were greedy and unnecessary led by dire ambition.

Scene 2

Characters: Lady Macbeth, Servant, Macbeth

Location: Forres. Another room.

Time: Unknown

Events: Lady Macbeth and Macbeth discuss how to move forward as King. Lady Macbeth isn’t content with being Queen it hasn’t lived her up to her expectations as they didn’t earn the title of King and Queen correctly. Macbeth doesn’t believe it is safe yet the audience learns this from the quote “We have scotched a snake not killed it:”. Macbeth is saying that now that he has done one bad thing, by going against the natural order, there is no reason to stop now, this is referred to by the quote “Things bad begun make strong themselves by ill.”

Scene 3

Characters: Three murderers, Banquo

Location: Forres. A park with a road leading to the palace.

Time: Late afternoon, sunset.

Events: Banquo is killed


Scene 4

Characters: Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, Rosse, Lenox, Lords, Murderer, and attendants

Location: A room of state in the palace. A banquet prepared

Time: Night

Events: Macbeth hosts a banquet. As the dinner begins the murderer arrives at the door and informs Macbeth that Banquo has been killed but Fleance got away. Macbeth is furious with the murderer as his job was only half done. When Macbeth returns to the banquet he sees Banquo as a ghost sitting at his seat and can not sit down while the Banquo, which no one else sees, is in Macbeth’s seat. Macbeth is overcome with fear and is trying to talk to Banquo and get him to leave while the guests and Lords believe he is insane and Lady Macbeth tries to reassure them he has been like this since a child and it will end soon. Macbeth wants to go see the Witches because he wants to know the worst that can happen. Macbeth claims he is a man which could face the worst creatures in the world however he can’t face this.

Quotes: “I am in blood Stepped in so far, that, should I wade no more. Returning were as tedious as go o’er.” – Macbeth. This quote shows how Macbeth believes he has gone so far it is just as easy to go forward as it is to go back.

Scene 5

Characters: Witch 1, Hecate,

Location: The heath, with thunder


Events: Witch 1 and Hecate meet. Hecate is annoyed they meet Macbeth and gave him his future with out her participating. However, Hecate believes they didn’t do a very good job anyway so Hecate is going to confuse him even more and says “He shall spurn  fate, scorn death, and bear his hopes ‘bove wisdom, grace and fear;”

Scene 6

Characters: Lenox, Lord

Location: Somewhere in Scotland

Time: Unknown

Events: Lenox starts the scene  by suggesting subtle irony that the audience may pick up on but  wouldn’t be noticed by anyone that Macbeth was acting overly upset about Duncan’s death which seemed suspicious. As  Lenox, Macduff, Fleance and other wealthy people of Scotland are undermining Macbeth by forming a war against Macbeth since many people don’t believe Macbeth became King the correct way and possibly went against the natural order.
